MARK F. CAVANAUGH is a graduate of Colby College where he was a Charles A. Dana scholar. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Connecticut School of Law and his LL.M. from New York University Graduate School of Law, specializing in taxation. Mark is licensed to practice in Massachusetts and New York. Mark’s major practice area is the representation of individuals and business owners in matters relating to estate planning, federal taxation, business formation, commercial real estate and business succession. His practice also includes representing employers and executives regarding matters such as employment contracts, as well as severance, change of control, noncompetition and confidentiality agreements. Mark’s expertise also extends to deferred compensation arrangements including qualified pension, stock option, restricted stock, phantom stock and similar plans. Mark has counseled benefit plan sponsors and fiduciaries in complying with federal laws regulating employer-sponsored benefit plans and has represented clients before the Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service in these matters. In addition to the above, Mark has a significant elder law practice. Mark is a member of the Board of Directors and frequent guest speaker for the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and he has been engaged as a consultant by the Massachusetts Division of Medical Assistance to develop legal compliance and training materials. Furthermore, he has been a presenter at legal education seminars sponsored by the Practicing Law Institute, American Bar Association and the Boston Tax Institute. Before becoming an attorney, Attorney Cavanaugh was a claims manager for major group insurance companies including CIGNA, Blue Cross of Massachusetts and Hartford Life Insurance Company.
